Book Review By Patience (UK) January 27, 2006

D’Morea Johnson’s easy to read “The Price Tag” will have you looking into areas of Christian Ministries like you never did before. If you can get past the REFLECTIONS section about Martin Luther 1483-1546 and go to chapter 1, he’ll have you questioning how our church leaders solicit for funds from their congregations and how they spend the money. In a world where everything costs money he asks “Are congregants now paying for the word?” and goes ahead to show you how it may seem like indeed we are paying for the word. From Money-lines, seed-offering, direct Mail-solicitation, telemarketing and the onset of mass media evangelism; when we sow into these ventures, how is this money spent and who’s maintaining our preachers’ luxurious lifestyles? Why are congregants encouraged to sow into the ministry but never receive any help when they are in trouble? No wonder many Christians are becoming non-church-attending Christians. While the leaders are leading ‘blessed’ lives, the pew fillers who give their last pennies because the man/woman of God says so, are living from pay check to pay check. He’ll have you nodding along, sighing and hopping mad! The book may indeed prove controversial but he sounds like a guy who doesn’t shun from controversy. He doesn’t encourage congregants to stop supporting the Ministry but rather urges us to pray for our leaders and to find out what we can personally do to bring awareness to the changes affecting the body of Christ. And to beware of how the Church spends our tithes and offering. We do need more people like D’Morea (lone voices in a world where whatever the man/woman of God says goes!) to wake us up and to make our leaders more accountable! Watch out for the next volume in 2007!
